Late surge pushes Airbus past Boeing for sales in 2017

Boeing: You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet
Boeing (BA) was the best performing Dow stock in 2017, and analysts are optimistic that it can keep rallying this year, helped by catalysts like lower taxes and aircraft production.  The company will report earnings at the end of the month, and B. Riley's Peter Arment and Asher Carey think that the company's ongoing execution, along with the benefit of lower corporate taxes, could push the stock over $400. Elsewhere, Cowen & Co.'s  Cai von Rumohr and his team reiterated an Outperform rating on Boeing today and raised their price target as well, from $320 to $415, citing strong demand, favorable production trends, and above-average benefits from the new tax bill. Boeing is down 1.2% to $332.20 this afternoon as the market finally gave up some gains, but it's still up 12.7% year to date and nearly 110% in the past 12 months.

Kazakhstan to purchase Boeing planes, build new GE locomotives
Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev said on Tuesday the country has reached agreements with several U.S. companies worth $7.5 billion (£5.5 billion), including contracts to supply passenger planes and locomotives to the Central Asian country. "The contracts will be about purchasing additional Boeing planes ... and assembling 900 new General Electric locomotives in Kazakhstan," Nazarbayev said following a meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House. Nazarbayev said some of the contracts, which will be unveiled later on Tuesday, also included investments in the agricultural sector.

Why Boeing Co Stock Is Still Better Than Airbus SE
Based on little more than the recent headlines, it would be easy to assume the worst for Boeing Co (NYSE:BA). Airbus SE (OTCMKTS:EADSY), which makes passenger jets as well, managed to secure more individual plane orders in 2017 than Boeing did — 1109 to 912 — prompting at least some owners of BA stock to wonder if the tide had finally turned against the iconic aircraft maker. While Airbus may be en route to delivering more jets than Boeing by 2020 (selling and delivering aren’t the same thing), Boeing is and remains the king of revenue and of profitability in the passenger jet race.

Aerospace or Defense? Yes Please!
Aerospace and defense stocks had a banner 2017, with Boeing (BA) being the best performing stock in the Dow last year, and plenty of analysts see that strength continuing in 2018.  Count Wells Fargo's Sam Pearlstein and his team among the Boeing bulls. Pearlstein writes that he expects more growth thanks to increases in Boeing's 737 production rate. Investors should watch for Boeing's penetration into the aftermarket as well as its impact on other suppliers, he writes.
