Stock Ideas from our New Zeke Ashton Screener

After stints in financial software and risk management consulting, Asthon pivoted to investment management after reading Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway letters. In 1999, Ashton became an investment analyst and featured writer for The Motley Fool. A popular figure on the site, Ashton developed and produced investing seminars and stock research reports.

Noted investor Whitney Tilson approached Ashton in 2005 to launch the Tilson Dividend Fund with Ashton as the Portfolio Manager. In 2013, the fund was renamed the Centaur Total Return Fund with Ashton still at the helm (Tilson would go on to exit professional money mangement completely). As of September 2017, the Centaur Total Return Fund had an annualized return of 9% since inception, outperforming the S&P 500 Total Return Index by 0.57% and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index by 1.13%. Its strong performance placed it 3rd out of 476 funds in the Equity Income Fund category.

On Centaur Mutual Funds’ website, Ashton outlines what characteristics he looks for in a stock:
